Jeff Bezos talks about two kinds of “decision doors.”
One-way doors – decisions you can’t go back on (e.g., building a highway).
Two-way doors – decisions you can test, evaluate, and reverse (e.g., a new sales pitch).
The problem? We treat almost all decisions as one-way.
The result? We hesitate. We wait. We close doors before we’ve even opened them.
I’ve seen it happen again and again; in meetings, projects, and organizations.
Arguments like: “It will be too difficult” or “We don’t know what to expect.”
But in reality, most doors are actually two-way.
You can almost always step back.
The most valuable ideas I’ve experienced came when someone dared to open the door anyway.
Not because it was safe, but because it was possible.
So, the next time you stand before a door – ask yourself:
Is it really a one-way street?
Or do you dare to take a step and see?
